(RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA) — On Sunday, December 16, 2012, at 1:14 A.M., officers from the Jurupa Valley Police Department responded to a residence located in the 4000 block of Crystal Lane, regarding a domestic violence. The caller said a Hispanic male adult and a Hispanic female adult were arguing and fighting at the residence. The caller later stated the male subject had exited the residence and was in possession of a handgun.
Upon arrival, the officer located a Hispanic male adult, later identified as Yelson Flores, 27 years old of Jurupa Valley, in the driveway of the residence. As the officer approached he observed Flores reach for his waistband. Believing Flores was reaching for his handgun, the officer fired his duty weapon striking the subject. The subject was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. It was later determined Flores was in possession of a handgun.
Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Police Department and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit were called out and assumed the investigation.
This is an ongoing investigation and no additional information will be provided at this time. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. The officer did not sustain any injuries during this incident.
